Start at the end of the world
Ny-Ålesund ‐ originally a coal mining town – is an international research platform for Arctic research.
KingsBay AS is in charge of the operation and maintenance of Ny‐Ålesund international science village.
Overview of Kings Bay AS
The state-owned company under the name KBKC, was built to develop coal mining in Ny-Ålesund from 1916 to 1963 supporting 400 inhabitants. Due to the growing domestic need for arctic research, KBKC took responsibility of managing the Ny-Ålesund region from 1974. KBKC was later renamed to Kings Bay in 1998 and became a company supporting full-scale Arctic research.
