Fellowship Programs

Facing the challenge from the ends of the world

About KOPRI Fellowship Programs

With an aim to contribute to the capacity building efforts in the polar research community and to expand its international research network, KOPRI annually selects and supports scientists focusing on Arctic and Antarctic regions. Interested researchers are invited to propose a joint research project to be conducted in collaboration with a KOPRI scientist, and once the fellow is selected, KOPRI supports the fellow to visit KOPRI campus to materialize their research plan.

Depending on the applicant’s country of origin, the fellowship is offered in one of the following two programs; the Asian Polar Science Fellowship Program and the Arctic Science Fellowship Program.

  • Asian Polar Science Fellowship Program
    • Since 2015, the Asian Polar Science Fellowship Program has been supporting the Asian polar research community by facilitating research collaboration within the region, and providing early career polar scientists with networking and research opportunities.
This fellowship invites both established and early career scientists from Asia to undertake research at KOPRI campus, located in Incheon, Korea. Early career researchers may also apply to join a field expedition team and conduct research in one of our Antarctic research stations or on the icebreaker.
  • Arctic Science Fellowship Program
    • The Arctic Science Fellowship Program, launched in 2018, is designed to promote research collaboration in the Arctic by offering networking and research opportunities to researchers from eight Arctic countries.
The fellowship offers a chance for early career researchers to actively participate in our Arctic research, while also supporting researchers with Indigenous heritage from all career stages to visit and conduct research at KOPRI.

Applying for the Fellowship

A key element of the fellowship program is that each participant should work with a cooperating KOPRI scientist. If you are considering applying to the program, the first step would be to contact a KOPRI scientist with your research proposal. To understand the scope of activities of each research teams, please refer to our annual report.
For more detailed research achievements, KOPRI abstracts provides an annual overview of all the abstracts published in academic publications.

Proposals will be reviewed by the committee using the following criteria: scientific qualifications of the applicant, feasibility of the research proposal and the work plan, strength of the linkage between the applicant and the cooperating scientist.
