Facing the challenge from the ends of the world

Overview of the Arctic Youth Research Group (21C Dasan Junior)
Objective

To raise awareness of the Poles, provide opportunities for the young generation to learn, research and experience the Arctic.

Target / Person

4 high school students*

* 4 students who are currently in high school or of an equivalent age (including one winner from the Polar Research Competition of the Korea Polar Research Promotion Association)

Duration

August 3 (Thur.) to 10 (Thur.), 7 nights, 8 days

Stay at Arctic Dasan Research Station: 4 days

13 visits between 2005 and 2017 (Number of Participants : total 87 / 1 elementary student, 29 junior high students, 57 high school students)

Major Activities
  • Observation of Arctic glaciers and microorganisms
  • Visit the Arctic Science Sanctuary and foreign bases
  • Perform experiments such as preprocessing of polar samples
  • Study the research done by Korea and other countries
  • Discussion of results and activities

Invitation to participate opens annually, during May

Selection Process

Review 1.
Review Application Form and Research Plan [10 candidates selected]
  • Recruiting committe evaluates the application and select 10 candidates
  • 10 candidates selected according to number of votes (in the case of draw, the committe will select through discussion)
  • Screening of application and research plan
    • Application form: Self introduction, Motivation, Implication / Research plan: Research purpose and plan
Interview 2.
Interview and Presentation of Research Plan [3 candidates selected]
  • Target person: 10 successful candidates
  • 2-step selection (50% each, selected in order of highest score)
    • Step 1: Presentation (use of power point, presentation skills and knowledge of polar fields)
    • Step 2: Interview (personality, leadership, etc.)
